Structure of the day -See Timetable for timing and order of events.
School orchestra and Colour Sway to play from 1:55 to 2:10. Two numbers by the Jazz Band and one to two numbers from Colour Sway. Jazz Band to play first, followed by Colour Sway.
During the period the bands are playing, we will have a slide show playing, similar to the one shown at Mass on St Johns feast day. Codie Gillies to be approached about putting this together.
Neal to begin addressing parents at 2:10. Neal’s address, and the speeches by the head-boy and year 9 student should not exceed 30 minutes in total. Ideally, timing should be Neal - 15 minutes, Nic - 5 to 10 minutes, Year 9 boy - 5 minutes. This is a total of 25 minutes. This gives us 5 minutes lee-way for over-runs and delays. Neal’s talk needs to include the following:
Information on our academic results focusing on (a) our excellent external and scholarship results, (b) our results show that we are doing as well if not better than many girls schools, (c) the fact that there is very little variance between our internal and external results showing we are fair and professional when marking internal assessments, and (d) our high participation rate which means we do not try to massage our results by withdrawing students from sitting the externals. Showing graphs from the "The Saint" would be good.
Our success in the sporting arena. While we are a small school we are holding our own in local competitions - soccer, hockey, rugby, cricket, basketball, badminton, canoe polo and squash.
Bullying and student safety and behaviour. How we do things at SJC. It is important to note that we have a Marist philosophy to do the best we can for ALL our students, including our difficult ones, but this is not done at the expense of other students or their safety.
Gateway program.
Year 9 boy to give his address. Talk about his year so far at St Johns. Comment on bullying. What has been good. What he has found challenging. Perhaps mention the impact of the Y9 camp at the beginning of the year.
Address by head-boy. Include aspects of how he has been enabled as head boy at the College and how students in general have been enabled. E.g. Nick and Brad run the 1st XI hockey, the catholic character group organised the mass for the St johns feast day, input at assemblies, etc.
Student parade (10 to 15 minutes). Another slide show to be put together for this parade. We will need to know who is in the parade and the sequence in which boys will be parading so that we can arrange the slide show accordingly. Need to get photos of boys playing sports. Neal can revisit sporting achievements during the parade or give more specific information.
Classroom visits. These to begin at 3:00 pm. There will be 10 groups. Each group will be accompanied by a prefect, a senior boy and one of the Y10 ambassadors. Specific areas for students to visit:
PE
Woodwork/Graphics
Science (Flames and Fire).
Commerce/Computing (UltraNet)
Maori - Tikanga and Kapa Haka
Food Tech.
Chapel
Maths.
English
Music
Y13 results (in graph format) to be shown on data projector in each class. Parents can be referred to these results as they enter the classroom.
Classroom activities to be fun, interactive and highlight the relationship between our students and teachers at St John’s. It is important we involve visiting students where possible. Our own students should be running the activities.
We will run a rehearsal for the open day at lunch time on the Friday before the open day
After classroom visits, groups to return to the gym for tea/coffee/baking and prize giving for competitions run during the classroom visits.
